Ramadan is more than abstaining from food and drink. It is a month of reflection, self-discipline, and drawing closer to Allah. During fasting hours, even simple routines, like brushing your teeth, raise questions.
Some questions many Muslims ask are:
The simple and direct answer is yes. It’s actually encouraged. In fact, using miswak is one of the best actions for a fasting person, both spiritually and physically.
Let’s explore the Sunnah of miswak and practical ways to use it while fasting in Ramadan.
Islam places a strong emphasis on oral hygiene. The Prophet (PBUH) consistently recommended the use of miswak, a practice that continues to hold significance for Muslims today.
It was narrated from Aishah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“One of the best actions of the fasting person is using the tooth stick (miswak).”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1677)
This hadith shows that miswak is not just about cleanliness; it is a rewardable act that brings spiritual benefit while fasting.

One narration by Abu Hurairah (PBUH) adds:
“Were it not for the fear of overburdening my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the siwak at every prayer.”
(Sahih Muslim)
And the Prophet (PBUH) also said:
“The siwak cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord.”
(Sunan an-Nasai, Musnad Ahmad – authenticated by Al-Albani)
Physically, fasting affects the mouth in several ways. Reduced saliva production can lead to:
Saliva is the mouth’s natural protector. It washes away food particles, neutralises acids, and prevents harmful bacterial growth. During fasting, saliva decreases, which is why many people experience dry mouth or “fasting breath.”
Miswak comes to the rescue.
It naturally cleans teeth and gums, reduces bacteria, and freshens breath, without breaking your fast. This makes it a practical and rewarding habit during Ramadan.

Modern research also supports the use of miswak for oral health:
Benefit | Description |
Antibacterial properties | Miswak contains compounds like flavonoids, silica, and alkaloids that fight harmful bacteria. |
Prevents plaque | Studies show miswak can reduce plaque and tartar formation, similar to a toothbrush. |
Gum protection | Miswak naturally strengthens gums and helps prevent gum disease. |
Whitens teeth | Its natural abrasives help remove stains gently. |
Dentists like Dr Abdulaziz Al-Saif explain:
“Miswak is a natural toothbrush that keeps your mouth clean, fresh, and fragrant during fasting.”
Clearly, miswak offers both spiritual and physical benefits for fasting Muslims. Learn more about benefits of using miswak here!
This is a common concern. Scholars agree:
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah explained:
“As for the miswak, it is permissible, and there is no difference of opinion concerning that… There is no shar’i evidence suggesting it is disliked.”
(Al-Fatawa al-Kubra 2/474)
Some scholars have argued that using miswak after midday is disliked (makruh), but there is no strong evidence to support this. The overall opinion is clear: miswak is allowed at any time during fasting.
Using toothpaste is permissible, but scholars recommend avoiding it during fasting unless necessary. Why?
Miswak, on the other hand, is safer and aligns with Sunnah. You can use it multiple times a day, including before prayers or before iftar.
