Every day brings new challenges, blessings, and lessons. As Muslims, we’re encouraged to begin and end our days by remembering Allah. Why? Because duas (supplications) in the morning and evening protect us, bring us peace, and remind us that everything is in Allah’s hands.
Allah says in the Qur’an,
“And remember [O Prophet] your Lord in your mind, with humility and fear, and without raising your voice; remember Him in the morning and evening, and do not become of those who are negligent.”
(Surah Al-A’raf 205)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made it a habit to recite certain duas at these times, and he taught us to do the same. These simple yet powerful words help us stay close to our Creator and find strength, even on the busiest or hardest days.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to teach his Companions, saying: ‘When one of you reached the morning, then let him say’,
Allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika amsaynā wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūt wa ilayka l-masīr
‘O Allah, by You we enter the morning, and by You we enter the evening, and be You we live, and by You we died, and to You is the Return.’
(Jami’ at Tirmidhi 3391)
By reciting this dua, we acknowledge that we depend on Allah's mercy and power in every moment. It helps us express gratitude for being granted another day and seeking His protection throughout it.
The Prophet (PBUH) said that whoever recites this in the morning has completed his obligation to thank Allah for that day, and whoever says it in the evening has completed his obligation for that night.
Allāhumma mā aṣbaha bī min ni‘matin aw bi aḥadin min khalqik fa minka waḥdaka lā sharīka lak falaka ʼl-ḥamdu wa lakash-shukr.
‘O Allah, whatever blessing has been received by me or anyone from Your creation is from You alone — You have no partner. All praise is for You, and thanks is to You.’
( Hisn-al-Muslim 81)
This short dua helps you start your day by recognising who really provides for you, not your job, not people, but Allah alone. Every breath, every meal, every moment of peace comes from Him.
Reciting this dua in the morning brings a sense of calm, focus, and purpose. It is a way of surrendering your day to Allah’s care, trusting that He will guide you, bless you, and protect you from harm.
Aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥa ‘l-mulku lillāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh. Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu ‘l-mulku wa lahu ‘l-ḥamd, wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr. Rabbi as’aluka khayra mā fī hādhā ‘l-yawm wa khayra mā ba‘dah, wa a‘ūdhu bika min sharri mā fī hādhā ‘l-yawm wa sharri mā ba‘dah. Rabbi a‘ūdhu bika mina ‘l-kasali wa sū’i ‘l-kibar, rabbi a‘ūdhu bika min ‘adhābin fī ‘l-nār wa ‘adhābin fī ‘l-qabr
‘We have entered the morning, and at this very time, the whole kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is due to Allah. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, the One; He has no partner with Him. The entire kingdom belongs solely to Him, to Him is all praise due, and He is All-Powerful over everything. My Lord, I ask You for the good that is in this day and the good that follows it, and I seek Your protection from the evil that is in this day and from the evil that follows it. My Lord, I seek Your protection from laziness and the misery of old age. My Lord, I seek Your protection from the torment of the Hellfire and the punishment of the grave.’
(Sahih Muslim 2723)
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to teach his Companions, saying: “When one of you reached the evening, then let him say,
Allāhumma bika amsaynā wa bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūt wa ilayka an-nushūr
‘O Allah, by You we enter the evening, and by You we enter the morning, and by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is the Resurrection.’
(Jami’ at Tirmidhi 3391)
By saying this dua in the evening, we recognise that Allah is the one who gives us every breath, moment, and action in life. It reminds us that life is a cycle, from morning to evening, and that this world is temporary.
Abu Huraira reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger (PBUH) and told Allah's Messenger (PBUH) that he was stung by a scorpion during the night. Thereupon he said: Had you recited these words in the evening? If you had, it would not have done any harm to you.
Iza nazala ahadukum manzilan falyaqul: A'udhu bikalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq. Fa'innahu lā yadurruhu shay'un ḥattā yartaḥila minhu
‘I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He created.’
(Sahih Muslim 2708b)
Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA) reported: When it was evening, the Prophet (PBUH) used to supplicate,
Amsaina wa amsal-mulku lillah, wal-hamdu lillah. La 'ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu
‘We have entered upon evening, and the whole kingdom of Allah, too, has entered upon evening. Praise is due to Allah. There is none who has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the One who has no partner with Him.’
(Riyad-as-Salihin 1455)

The Prophet (PBUH) said that the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is this dua,
‘O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You have the power to pardon.’
(Sahih al Bukhari 6306)
The Prophet (PBUH) said that if someone recites this dua during the day with full belief and dies before the evening, they will be among the people of Paradise. Similarly, if someone recites it at night with firm faith and dies before the morning, they will be among the people of Paradise.
This beautiful dua seeks Allah's forgiveness and well-being in both this world and the Hereafter. It covers every aspect of life, asking for protection in our faith, health, family, and wealth.
Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati, wa amin raw'ati wahfazni min bayni yadayya, wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa 'audhu bika an ughtala min tahti
‘O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religious and my worldly affairs. O Allah, conceal my faults, calm my fears, and protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in You from being taken unaware from beneath me.’
(Sunan Ibn Majah 3871)
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi
‘Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with praising Him.’
( Riyad as-Salihin 1451)
He who recites in the morning and in the evening the statement, one hundred times, will not be surpassed on the Day of Resurrection by anyone with better deeds than one who utters the same words or utters more of these words.
Starting and ending our day with these beautiful duas helps us stay connected to Allah. They remind us of His protection, mercy, and blessings in every part of our lives. By making these simple prayers part of our daily routine, we not only gain peace of mind but also earn great rewards in this life and the next.
